Mailday / Recent Pickups Thread

  1. 2 years ago

Did you get anything good in the mail recently? Find anything locally that you want to share? Post it here!

Since the member collection thread is private, this is a public thread for sharing any recent pickups.

  2. I'll start it off.

Found a Mattel Synsonics Drums electronic drum machine at a local thrift store. Needs some work to get it up and fully running but shouldn't be a big deal.

Nice, those are fun machines. Is this one going to eventually get bent?

  4. I'll have to see if I can find any neat patch points when I'm working on it...

Here's another recent VHS pickup. Haven't watched it yet, just need to find the right people for a viewing party. Definitely not date night material...

Looks like it has a lot of potential to either be a classic... or really terrible.

Haha, lots of potential there (totally jelly :) )! I'll post a recent VHS pickup that is similarly dramatic.

OK, here it is... I cannot believe I found a sealed copy of this potentially life-saving gem; I have known many that have fallen that could have been saved by this tape.

  7. Great post idea, andyandy! I have been receiving this catalog in the mail for a few issues (previous resident subscribed to it). At first I didn't think much of it, but I have to admit AC and I have cracked up over the wide variety of items. A combo of As Seen on TV items, clothing, homeware, even items of the eh, "romantic" nature. You know, what AC's VHS is talking about above.
I'm totally holiday shopping with this!-image--image-

  8. @AC Slater Weird that you found that since I found that Dobson final interview with Ted Bundy on VHS recently. It was hard to tell at times who one the crazy one was.

@tangerine those catalogs were responsible for decorating 80% of my grandmother's house. Such wonderful tackiness. It's a shame you don't know anyone that recently bought a house because there are some really good gifts in there. :-D

Do you have any of those As Seen on TV stores around you? A few of the rundown shopping malls have those stores and it's surreal to look in and see all that crap on the shelves.

  9. @andyandy I'm buying all my holiday gifts with that catalog. I wonder if anyone will be talking to me by the New Year ;-) I've never seen one of those As Seen on TV stores, just displays in other stores. I did buy AC a Snuggie one year.
    -image- Looks ridiculous, but comfy.
Can't wait to put that in a future fashion thread of the 2000s in 30 years.

Haha, the catalogs we are getting are addressed to an 80+ year old lady that used to live here. What I find interesting, besides the intermixed items like lace dickies, adult toys, and banana bags, is the prices seem reasonable and they claim free shipping. I'm kinda suspicious!

@tangerine I've never seen one of those As Seen on TV stores, just displays in other stores.

I think I have at least, there is a mall (Valco in Cupertino near Apple's HQ) that is fairly vacant (and sorta run-down like @andyandy said) and shows up on google maps. I do not think it was open when I passed by though... should check it out!

  11. I'll have to take some pics of the As Seen on TV store the next time I'm at that mall. Seems like such a bad business model but what do I know? The mall that it's in is getting slowly transformed into a large walk-in hospital clinic. Really weird.

@tangerine I got a Snuggie as a gift a few years back. I felt like I was wearing a bathrobe backwards but less comfortable. I felt like a fire hazard whenever I had it on. I did make the effort to try it out and even got the mail a few times while wearing it. A few of my neighbors moved out shortly after so I like to blame the Snuggie...

Picked this up at a yard sale over the weekend for $5. Didn't notice until after I had gotten home that the first disc of the first season wasn't in there. >_< At least the episodes are on YouTube to get us started. I remember the show being decent hopefully it will still be enjoyable.

Oh awesome, good find! We watched it on DVD a while back, it's a pretty interesting show since it's so different, especially given the time period. Last time we went to NYC I wanted to see the carousel at Central Part because of a certain episode. The later episodes get pretty bizarre, but still entertaining.

Keep an eye out for Mouse... there needs to be a better shot of him available online...

  14. Yea, Beauty and the Beast! That '80s version is so oddly awesome. Some very dark moments at times looking at human nature. I love how they portrayed the underground sewer of NYC, especially the waterfalls.

Kind of a slow week but this epic find for $1 made it all worth it.

It's Dolph Lundgren's classic 80s exercise video . It's in the god-tier of celebrity exercise videos. Everything you would possibly want in an exercise video is here. Ridiculously cheesy cut scenes? Check. Dolph's deadpan voiceover work? Check. Overuse of mood lighting? Check. That 80's soft rock/Weather Channel background music? Check.

But, don't take my word for how awesome this is. Check it out on YouTube!

Really nice score for a dollar.

This pickup broke a long streak of not buying any GPK. It's the GPK Movie Sountrack on vinyl, a sealed promo copy. I had just recently went to Ikea and bought a vinyl frame and put it in the frame straight-away to decorate the man cave. :)

    Whoa!!! Awesome pickup!

Really nice to see all the detail that gets lost in the cropped VHS cover art

Thanks! True, I like the crop on the artwork this format gives. One thing I also think is unusual is the canary yellow fill in the banner with the black text. I had no idea there was a vinyl (or any format) album until recently... I am just surprised they went through the effort of even making it.

On the way home from dinner, we stopped by 2nd and Charles which is a used bookstore and came home with these two fine gems:

I've been curious to read the Dustin Diamond Behind The Bell book so for $5 it was worth picking up even if the stories may not be historically accurate.

Excited about the Terry Funk book too. He's had a remarkable career even though he's not a household name like Hulk Hogan.
